Dogs and Cats Who Saved the Day

When it comes to bravery, our furry friends often surprise us in the most extraordinary ways. Whether it's a daring dog jumping into action or a clever cat pulling off a life-saving move, pets have a remarkable way of becoming the heroes we never expected. Get inspired by some pawsome stories of dogs and cats who went above and beyond to save the day!

Take Eve, for example, a Rottweiler with a heart of gold. Katie Vaughn, who is paralyzed, was headed to an antique show in Atlanta when her van caught fire. Unable to assemble her wheelchair, Katie was trapped. Without hesitation, Eve jumped out, grabbed Katie by the leg, and pulled her to safety from the flames! Though Eve suffered burns to her paws, Katie was unharmed. "She just loves me," Katie said. "She helps me all the time."

Then there's Baby, an ordinarily shy 13-year-old tabby from Chicago. One night, a fire broke out in Letitia and Josh's home, and Baby sprang into action, waking them up with loud, urgent meows. Letitia, who was seven months pregnant with twins, was able to escape safely with her family. Firefighters called Baby a hero, and she certainly earned her stripes that day!

Speaking of hero cats, meet Walter. Hazel, Walter's owner, says he's saved her life more than 50 times! Hazel has diabetes, and it turns out Walter has a sixth sense for her blood sugar levels, alerting her when they're dangerously low - even waking her up in the middle of the night when necessary. Funny enough, Hazel had actually adopted a dog to do this job, but Walter turned out to be the real lifesaver!

Not all heroes wear capes - or weigh more than 6 pounds! Take Joe, the feisty Yorkshire Terrier. When a black bear wandered into his owner Deborah's house, Joe wasn't going to let it slide. Joe chased the much larger intruder right back outside despite his tiny size. Talk about bravery in a small package!

And who could forget Roselle, the guide dog who became a symbol of courage on September 11, 2001? On that tragic day, Roselle led her owner, Michael Hingson, who is blind, down 78 floors of the World Trade Center. With calm and focus, she helped him navigate through the smoke and chaos, getting them to safety just moments before the towers collapsed.

Just two months ago, 13-year-old Gita saved her human. Keith had fallen and injured his leg outside his remote summer cabin in Washington state. Gita lay down on a nearby road, waiting for help. A county sheriff patrolling the wooded area saw Gita on the road and decided she must be a stray. However, Gita refused to get in his vehicle, and Sheriff Wright had a funny feeling that something was wrong. He followed Gita and found Keith, 84, who had broken his hip.

He had been out there, injured for hours, and the sheriff credits Gita with saving his life.

The bond we share with our pets is incredible, and their instinct to protect us is even more so. Time and again, they prove that they're not just companions but heroes in the truest sense. Hug your pet today; they may save your life tomorrow.

Collar Choices for Your Furry Sidekick

Collars aren't just for looks—they're essential for walks, ID tags, and showing off that all-important rabies vaccination. Even your kitty might need one, especially if they like to sneak outside. Accidents happen, after all!

But with oodles of options, how do you choose the right collar for your furry friend? Let's try to break it down!

Vets recommend breakaway collars for cats. These clever collars unbuckle when tugged, so the collar pops off if your feline gets caught on something while adventuring. They also make cat flea collars in the breakaway style; safety first! If you're walking your cat outside, we recommend using a halter.

For your canine companion, the options are endless.

Classic Flat Collar - The go-to for many pups. These nylon collars come in a rainbow of colors and fun patterns to match your dog's style. They are a solid choice for everyday wear.

Leather Collars - These collars look classy and are comfy - they soften over time. They come in flat or rolled style. Keep them clean and conditioned, and they'll last a long time.

Waterproof Collars - Does your dog love splashing in puddles or taking an impromptu swim? Then a waterproof collar made of biothane or coated nylon might be what you need. These collars repel water and stink—yes, even that wet dog smell! A quick rinse and they're as good as new.

Martingale Collar - Originally designed for hounds like Greyhounds and Whippets, martingale collars are gaining popularity for all breeds. These collars gently tighten without choking, when your dog tries to back out, making them a great option for escape artists.

Here are a few final tips for collar confidence:

GPS Collars: If your pup is an explorer, you can attach a GPS tracker to its collar to monitor its adventures.

Reflective Material: This is a bright idea for nighttime walks.

Breakaway in Crates: If your pet uses a crate, remove their collar or use a breakaway version.

Microchips Are a Must: Don't rely solely on ID tags—microchipping is the ultimate backup plan if your pet ever gets lost.

With all these options, we hope this clears up any collar confusion. If you still have questions, reach out to us or your vet for advice. Now, go and enjoy those walks with your trusty sidekick!
